(Note to J: needs fleshing out with screenshots) - using Audacity GENERATE - > WHITE  NOISE feature

 

I have used Audacity to generate White Noise, and then have looked at the spectrum when the latter passes through sound absorbing materials such as foam. Works really well for showing absorption at different frequencies
